Being totally tired of my students complaining, "I don't know what to write" I invented these wheels to give them some ideas for characters, settings and some item to include in the narrative.
Teaching students to write interesting Narratives, is difficult. They can have a scaffold and a plan etc but if they don't read great fiction and have an active imagination, they have no ideas!
There are 6 wheels altogether; 2 for characters, 2 for settings or places and 2 for random items.
This was a very successful tool, as I found as soon as they spun a character, they became excited and as they kept spinning their ideas grew, and they'd race away to start. WANTING to WRITE!
I printed and laminated and have a spinner attached with a split pin (brass brad)
Students spin and they must include those results in their narrative.
So, for example, they may spin a clown, shark, church, torch and a tree; or a ghost, a monkey, jungle, rainbow and some false teeth.
Once they've spun, the smiles and ideas seem to flow, and off they go to create and write.
They seem to need 2 or 3 characters; 1 place and 1 or 2 items, but you can set your own limits. Sometimes, I spin one or two wheels and everyone has to use the results.
I gave them "chance" so if they didn't like one result, they could re-spin.
This system took the pressure off the children, and I found the narratives and ideas were fresh and the vocabulary stretched, because they were sometimes out of their usual comfort zone.
I know the system worked because gradually less students used the wheels. They already had an idea for a character etc; they wanted their own setting, job done!
I've also "spun the wheels" for speaking activities and oral story-telling. It is entertaining to create a class story, and continue to spin a wheel, to determine what the next student must include. This activity makes listening compulsory!
These are a fantastic resource for classroom, casual teachers, tutors and home schoolers, because it is difficult to interest and involve all students in the same compulsory topic. I find the kids enjoy this novel approach and become involved and interested in the random fun aspect. It relieves the pressure.
